Adventure
awaits
When enjoying our
Tours don’t hesitate to take some of the side roads towards the shore. This
is where you will find private little beaches, or spectacular views that so
many pass by. Just be careful when pavement ends. Many of these roads turn
to clay - no gravel to speak of in PEI - or even sand parking areas.
There are many
attractions and neat stops along the way. Fishing villages in particular
provide great photo opportunities. |
TOUR # 2
Looping the Central Region
Starting in Charlottetown, find your way to Rte 1, and head west towards
Summerside. As you leave the city you will pass over the North River
Causeway where fishermen can often be seen tonging for oysters. Continue
into Cornwall, watching for Rte 19. Turn left towards Meadowbank. Follow
Rte 19 to For Amherst Natural Historic Site.
Drive in as far as the road takes you for a great view of Charlottetown
Harbour. The French established the first European settlement in Prince
Edward Island here in 1720. In 1758 the British captured it and build a
fort to guard the narrows and entrance to the three rivers that flow into
the harbour.
Overlooking Cavendish Beach in the Prince Edward Island
National Park.
The earthworks of that fort
provide a spectacular view of the city. It is a favourite place for locals
to watch fireworks on Canada Day.
Back on Rte 19 follow the
shore road west (turn left from Fort Amherst) to Rte 1. Left again for just
a couple of miles, then left again at Hampton to take you into
Victoria-by-the-Sea. This village has some terrific eateries, shops, a
wharf area for browsing and a great little theatre. This road loops back to
Rte. 1. At Tryon you can either follow the main highway for a smooth
straight run to Summerside (follow the highway signs), or take Rte 10 (left)
and meander past Borden and through farm country. They both end up in the
same place.
When you come to traffic
lights just outside of Summerside follow Rte 2 to Kensington, watching for
Rte 20 on the left. Keep your eyes peeled left for some magnificent views.
At Park Corner a tribute to famous author Lucy Maud Montgomery attracts
visitors from all over the world. French River provides a lovely photo
stop.
At New London pick up Rte
6, turning left towards Cavendish. You are entering the most popular
tourist destination in the province. The Prince Edward Island National Park
offers both beaches and a historic site devoted to Ann of Green Gables. In
North Rustico follow the signs down to North Rustico Harbour.
Back
on Rte 6, watch for Rte 258 turn right. Just a few miles will take you into New
Glasgow. Time to eat. One of the best lobster suppers to be found anywhere
is right here in the village. Enjoying lobster here is almost a “must do”
Island experience.
When tummies are full, head back to Rte 16, turn right and head for Brackley
Beach. Whether you are camping or want a cottage or inn, this area offers
some simply great accommodation. Turning left on Rte 15 takes you to
the P.E.I. National Park. Turning right on Rte 15 will take you
to Millstream Cottages and Motel or for campers Vacationland (home of Island
Rally) and takes you back to Charlottetown and the end of our tour.
Campers at Vacationland can choose wooded sites, or open
field. Owner Tom Nicholls enjoys cruising on his Harley.
This tour is approximately 220
kilometers/138 miles
