CHARLOTTETOWN
The Island’s largest city, Charlottetown, has combined
modern amenities with the preservation of its rich history to create a
premier destination.
Back in 1864, the Fathers of Confederation came to
Charlottetown to hammer out the details of forming a nation.
While they were here they were also entertained, wined and dined, and had a
high old time in this, Canada’s birthplace. The spirit of camaraderie that
reigned in the town was perpetuated by a rare visit by a circus. With these
grand goings on it is no wonder that Charlottetown, and indeed Prince Edward
Island gained a reputation as a great place to visit.
Many diaries credit the convivial atmosphere found with
helping along the political debates that set the tone for the formation of a
nation based on respect for culture and the individual citizen.
Charlottetown is still a place of celebration with
festivals, theatre, sidewalk cafés, outdoor entertainment, and numerous pubs
and nightspots to set your toes a-taping.
Enjoy the waterfront experience at Peake’s Quay with fun
eateries, Founders Hall, marine, shops and seagoing vessels ranging from
cruise ships to kayaks. Even tall ships drop by from time to time. It was
here, in an area now preserved as Confederation Landing Park, that the
Fathers of Confederation first came ashore.
This area of the city is steeped in heritage and history
which comes alive all summer long through re-enactments, visits to Province
House, Founders Hall and by walking the Olde Town where many historic
buildings are restored to former glory. A continuous board walk helps you
get the kinks out as it follows the shoreline to Victoria Park where a
restored battery of cannon marks the spot where Yankee privateers kidnapped
our Governor, back in George Washington’s time.
The Old Town offers an abundance of eateries, bars,
clubs, attractions and shopping. Range further afield in the city for more
modern malls and big box stores, and all services.
