TRUE FOODIE LOVES
SIMPLE PICNIC FARE
One of the things that
motorcycling has taught me is that a veritable feast can be packed in a
saddlebag or trunk, ready to enjoy at a shore-side picnic table, or in our
hotel room. As a true” foodie” I love eating out, experiencing different
cuisines in different settings, but even I have to admit that a simple feast
of local fare picked up here and there along our travels is hard to beat.
A sign for fresh Island
baked goods, a stop at a deli or rural corner store, the farmers market or a
road side stand, provide the makings. Round it out with a stop at a wharf
to pick up already cooked lobster, or some succulent oysters for an instant
feast.
Or use a disposable BBQ, or
camp stove to cook up burgers, mussels (Just wrap them loosely in a couple
of layers of foil and place on the grill. When the foil puffs up, the
mussels are done). With a little ingenuity two-wheel chef wannabe’s can
whip up a special treat and enjoy a fun experience. Something as simple as
home-made bread toasted over a campfire gives a special “flavour” to your
holiday.
Even a trip to the grocery
store can garner up a delicious picnic. Just remember to only buy what you
can eat without having to store it for long, keep perishables cool - you can
get some nifty fold up insulated bags that are perfect for this job. We
count utensils, a can opener, two plastic plates, and matches as must have
items in our packing.
One of the best
things about a couple of simple picnic style meals is the fact that they
lessen the guilt factor when we indulge in a decadent lobster feast or fine
dining experience. After all, eating out is one of the most enjoyable parts
of any vacation and variety in meals is truly the spice of life. - Julie V.

EATING OUT
|
The link between great food and Prince Edward Island is
one reinforced with every curve in the road. This Island province relies on
harvesting the land and sea so whether it is a potato field with neatly
planted rows that give a patchwork quilt look to the landscape, or fishing
boats plying our waters, you see constant reminders that you are never far
from the best that nature can produce.
It isn’t a real secret that eating is one of the favoured
activities of Islanders and visitors alike and we have many great food
establishments to prove it. From fine dining prepared by high calibre chefs
to casual far from canteens on the wharf - the range of offerings is huge
with something to meet every taste. Its just a case of checking the menus
to see what titillates your taste-buds.
