MONTAGUE
The eastern third of Prince Edward Island
offers truly great riding country which all seems to revolve around the town
of Montague located on both sides of the Montague River in King's County.
Several highways serve the community: Route 210 (the Queens Road), Route 4
and Route 17. It's a great stop
if you are touring. Lots of
eateries, a beautiful river frontage where you can access boat tours,
walking trails and places to explore.
Montague
has a rich history, much of it associated with transportation.
The placement of the rail line in the early 1900's connected
Montague, not only to the rest of the province but also, to Canada. The
former CN station and turn table are important features in Waterfront Park
on the river. The turntable is used as a natural amphitheater for youth
theatre productions, or a resting spot to watch marine pleasure craft after
walking along the Confederation Trail.
The station building is a tourist information centre and tourism
retail outlet. This is where
you can find out what is going on during your visit
The trains no longer visit Montague, neither do the
schooners and sailing vessels that used to suply commerce.
Marine traffic is mostly fishing boats and recreational.
Still, the town continues to prosper as a centre of government
services and as a hub for commercial activity.
The waterfront, full services, and a number of restaurant facilities,
make Montague is a destination for tourists.
Points of Interest within the Town include: the Museum
(PEI's oldest museum - celebrating 50 years in 2008), the Waterfront, and
the Confederation Trail which travels along the side of the Montague River.
The Garden of the Gulf Museum, housed in a historic
sandstone building, officially opened on May 16, 1958. Located on a hill
overlooking the bridge, the museum is in the former Post Office and Customs
House. The brick and stone structure was built in 1887 with stone quarried
from the river and brick that was made locally by Robert Stewart.
Montague is a great jumping off spot for some nearby
not-to-be-missed sites: Panmure Island, Brudenell Resort, Park and Golf
Club, Georgetown with its theatre, the Roma Settlement Historic Site.
