NEWS AND VIEWS

WOOD ISLANDS LIGHTHOUSE ON THE MOVE

During the late winter of 2009 tensions were running a little high when the folks down at Wood Island announced that the planned to up and move the lighthouse which has been guiding ferries and marine traffic since 1876.  Erosion of the cliffs near the lighthouse placed it in danger so the decision was made.  Load ‘er on a truck and haul ‘er inland!

It was a cold, sunny morning when the old lighthouse, and the attached museum, were lifted off the original foundations, gently placed on a specially made trailer and moved away from the cliff.  They had waited for a perfect day.  Cold, the ground still frozen, with no wind.  Even so, the sheer weight of the building, plus its height, caused it to sway just enough to make onlookers stomachs knot!  When one end of the trailer lifted off the ground everyone was just a tad stressed!

Then the bulldozer started sliding on the ice, and only managed to stop by digging the forks on the bucket into the ground.  It was a happy day when the whole kit and kabudal was where it is supposed to be. On a new foundation this tourist attraction remains a great stop.  Its lovely to take some time to visit the light, watch the ferry come or go and take in the sea air.  For more info click here

BIGGER AND BETTER AT RED ROCK H-D

If you haven’t been to Red Rock Harley-Davidson since last year, you’re in for a BIG surprise!  There have been HUGE and exciting changes in the dealership.

Since moving from their original location in Winsloe, they have undergone an intensive renovation and upgrade, all towards spotlighting the trademark and serving you, the customer, better.

“Not only is the location much easier to find, we’ve now got four times the square footage of display space,” says Shane Bolger, Finance Associate with Red Rock.

“There’s more parking, a bigger parts department, more clothing, and a full-time Motorclothes consultant.”  (Amanda Vickerson)

The main level houses the parts department, Motorclothes section and offices, (6000 sq ft.) while the Mezzanine area on the upper level has approximately 2000 square feet for display. (Compare that to the old shop, which had only 2600 sq ft, in total!)

“It’s great, because now we can display all the used bikes inside, as well as the up to 25 new motorcycles on the floor in the winter,” says Bolger. “We have so much more room here.”  (The new 2008 models were introduced in late July; however, all that were left on the floor on the day of this interview were a few of the new 2007 models which had not yet been purchased.)

Rounding out the renovation — the icing on the cake, you could say – is a rad new relaxation area, consisting of comfy leather couches surrounding a wide screen TV, as well as a complimentary coffee station.

So ... if you haven’t been to Red Rock lately, scoot on over. You’re sure to find something to please when you walk through the doors of their new home!
