BIKER KNOWS HIS OYSTERS
Liam and Kim Dolan opened the Claggagh Oyster House
to celebrate one of Prince Edward Island’s most succulent shellfish.
Claddagh Oyster House
131 Sydney Street in Olde Charlottetown

Harley owner Liam Dolan of Charlottetown just opened a
new eatery, Claddagh Oyster House, which offers up some of the finest fare
you could hope to sample. Being an oyster house, this succulent shellfish
is a star item on the menu. In fact their “100 oysters for 100 bucks” is
surprisingly popular. Afficionados will tell you it’s a great deal and
the chance to sample oysters from far and wide a true bonus. Of course you
can order one oyster to try, or a sample plate to taste the featured
shellfish of the day. Liken it to wine tasting! This a swell place for
fine food. Seafood, steaks, specials that change with the availability of
fresh ingredients....everything we sampled was delicious. Service to
smile about, knowledgeable staff that helped us choose a great meal made
it an enjoyable visit. We like to check out the places featured on our
web site - and this was a delightful experience. The atmosphere is a
plus. Just slightly upscale, yet casual and friendly. The Oyster House
somehow inspires conversation with your neighbours, and the fellow
shucking oysters behind the bar. On our rating scale, Claddagh Oyster
House, located in a historic building in Olde Charlottetown scored high!
You may even find John Bil, current Canadian and North
American Oyster Shucking Champion behind the bar. He knows more about
oysters than just about anyone else we know and is always ready to share
his lore and knowledge. We suggest you call for a reservation if
possible, it’s a popular spot.
New Glasgow Lobster Suppers
Rte 258, New Glasgow
The traditional lobster supper is
an institution that goes back many years in Prince Edward Island.
Starting up with the late spring lobster fishery, these fun suppers
provides an experience similar to those church or community events of days
gone by. Lobster (or alternate menu choices) is just part of a meal that
includes mussels, salads, desserts and such. You will not leave hungry.
In fact those who over indulge might have trouble swinging their leg over
their bike! You can always take a stroll around the villages till that
too-full feeling goes away. New Glasgow Lobster Suppers has a fine
reputation which is totally justified so you might see a line at the
door. Not to worry, they have lots of seats inside and it is, in this
writers eyes, well worth any wait.

Peake’s Quay Restaurant and Bar
bottom of Great George St.,
Charlottetown
One of Charlottetown’s hot spots,
Peake’s as its know locally, serves up a satisfying combination of good
grub and ambiance which is determined by the time of day. A favourite
with locals on a hot summer evening Peaks offers good rollicking
entertainment by night and a great waterfront atmosphere during the day.
This isn’t fine dining, the menu would be described more as bar or pub
fare and perfect for enjoying on their deck overlooking the marina and
Charlottetown Harbour where cruise ships dock from time to time. They have
desserts, but my recommendation is to opt for ice cream from the dairy bar
downstairs.
