SUMMERSIDE
If ever there was a town known for throwing out the
welcome mat for motorcyclists, it is Summerside. As hosts to two large
Harley Owner Group rallies as well as the Kenneth LeClaire Memorial Run held
annually to support the Children’s Wish Foundation, the folks here know how
to please. They also k now what a great group of people make up the biking
community.
Although a small city, Summerside makes up for its small
population with a big warm heart. Accommodations are eager to host you,
entertainment will keep your toes tapping and the laughs rolling. In fact
the area close to downtown is a mecca for Celtic performance, dinner
theatre, and traditional music.
The waterfront has become the pride and joy of Summerside
with boardwalks framing the beautiful Bedeque Bay and Indian Head
Lighthouse. Harbourfront Theatre, The
Waterfront Mall, Spinnakers Landing boutiques and eateries, the
Marina and The
Shipyard are just a few of the amenities. Downtown, just
a block back from the waterfront, is home to a number of murals depicting
the heritage of the region.
Whether you want to stroll the bay-side boardwalk or a
walking trails, visit the marina,
or watch a rousing game of baseball, sports
and outdoor lovers will find a good mix of spectator and participation
activities right in town.
A drive through the older town will reveal many stately
homes owned by builders of fine sailing ships, and silver fox ranchers.
It’s a fascinating history worth exploring.
Just outside of Summerside, in Malpeque, you will find a
fine Acadian Museum which will help you appreciate and understand the
history of these original European settlers. Slemon Park, a former air base
will interest those with an aeronautical interest.
Summerside is the gateway to the North Cape Coastal Drive
which takes the adventurous around the northern shore roads of western P.E.I.
(Up West to locals) to North Cape and back again, making it a perfect,
central, overnight stop.
