Phantom Bell Ringers Forerunners of Death
Charlottetown is host to a number of ghostly tales and
strange legends including the Phantom Bell Ringers of the Kirk of St. James
and the Wreck of the Fairy Queen. Back in the era of sailing ships a
gentleman of the town was walking towards town when her heard the church
bell tolling. Knowing it was strange, he and others went to the church and
saw the ghostly figures of three women enter the church and ascend the bell
tower. After getting the key to open the door through which the women has
passed, they could not find the women, nor determine why the bell continued
to toll, without the aid of a bell puller.
Later that day word was received that the sailing vessel
Fairy Queen, on route to Pictou, Nova Scotia with cargo and passengers, had
sunk. Among the passengers were three women --- parishioners of the church,
had drowned after being abandoned by the captain and crew. This story of
forerunners, and the subsequent trial of the captain and crew is just one of
the fascinating tales to be found in the book,
Ghosts and Legends of Prince Edward Island. |

LITTLE
RED ROADS
We’ve all felt the lure of an unknown stretch of road, and PEI has miles and
miles of marvelous motoring.
Sure, we have some stretches of bad road ... but any province which says it
doesn’t is fibbing! And, while we’re talking about roads, don’t
automatically dismiss our unpaved byways. “Unpaved” doesn’t mean impassable!
Four wheeled traffic usually leaves two gravel-free paths down most clay
roads, and – with lower speeds, and some due care and attention for patches
of sand – Island Heritage red roads (especially those out around the
Fredericton/South Granville area) offer some spectacular scenery.
The instructor of the local M/C safety course told me, “If you’re going to
be a REAL biker, you have to learn to ride on all kinds of roads, and you
can’t guarantee that every place you go will have pavement, so ... “
Looking for adventure? Give a little red road a try!
